From the beginning of the September 2008 season Cheltenham RFC has a Referees Section. The aim of the section is to ensure that all referees at the club have support and opportunities for developing their knowledge and skill and that as many matches as possible are refereed by a qualified person. Enhanced refereeing standards will improve the enjoyment and safety of our, and visiting, players.
We are lucky to have the considerable support of RFU referee Chris White and Steve Harland the RFU Referee Development Manager for the South West in the venture.
The Referees Section seeks:
- to provide opportunities for all who are interested in being a referee
- to encourage those who are interested to take their refereeing as far as they can
- to introduce club referees to the Gloucester & District Referees Society
Anyone (player, coach or parent) who is interested in training to be a referee should contact Peter Brunt on gro.sregitmahnetlehc|gnieerefer#gro.sregitmahnetlehc|gnieerefer for information.

Meetings/Training
Starting Monday 9th November 2009 .
The 2009 ELRA course will begin on the above evening and run for four consecutive Mondays. There are 17 taking part in the training, an increase on last year. This year the course is being run by the RFU's David Payne. Timings 6.30 to 9.30. Mr White expected to make guest appearances on some of the evenings to keep us all on our toes!
Monday 23rd February 2009 .
Steve Harland covered the scrum in a great session that was attended by a number of non-referees wanting to gain an insight into the perspective that a referee has of this challenging area of the game.
Chris White kindly gave of his time to lead one of the workshop sessions in which the role of each front row player was examined, comparing and contrasting the different objectives they have depending on whether or not the put in is by their side. The highlighted their different motivations and helped to identify what a referee needs to look for to prevent or manage front row issues.
A series of video clips of scrummages were then shown from which a number of excellent learning points were drawn out.
I hope to arrange a final session with Steve before the end of the season.
Monday 20th October 2008. Our first Training Session was run by Steve Harland and Debbie Innes. Topics discussed were the role of the Assistant Referee and managing/being part of "a team of three" and a detailed look at the tackle and ruck, illustrated by video clips. Information on the next training session will be available shortly.
